Kamagra is an oral tablet that contains 50mg of the active ingredient Sildenafil citrate which is used to help men that are unable to get and maintain erections.
Erectile dysfunction is due to inadequate blood flow to the penis. Kamagra helps by increasing the blood flow as a result of sexual stimulation. Nitric oxide is released in the erectile tissues of the penis through sexual stimulation. This chemical then activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase which in turn increases levels of another chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which is responsible for blood vessel relaxation, allowing more blood flow to erectile tissues to produce an erection. An enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) is also present but breaks down cGMP thus leading to loss of erection due to blood flow prevention. Kamagra specifically inhibits the action of PDE5 to allow the activation of cGMP to produce an erection.
Kamagra 50mg is manufactured by Ajanta Pharma
Men allergic to Kamagra, its active ingredient Sildenafil and all its inactive ingredients, must not take this medication.
Kamagra is contraindicated in men taking nitrate medications for heart conditions because Kamagra can increase the hypotensive effects of nitrates. It is also contraindicated to those who have cardiovascular problems where sexual activity is not allowed. Men with eye disease such as non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) or retinitis pigmentosa are also not advised to take this medication.
Warnings and Precautions
Erectile dysfunction may be an effect of other medical conditions and medications. Prior to taking Kamagra, it is best to check with a healthcare provider if one is healthy enough to take the medication because it may aggravate some medical conditions. For instance, Kamagra is not advisable to patients with angina because sexual activity may precipitate angina.
Advise the doctor for the following medical conditions aside from those listed above:
- Blood problems
- Deformed penis or Peyronie’s disease
- Stomach ulcers
- Other medications
- History of vision loss
Kamagra can also interfere with other medications, as it can lower blood pressure, hence the medication can potentiate the hypotensive effects of alpha-blockers and other hypotensive drugs.
Kamagra must not be taken with other treatments and instruments that help produce erections.
Kamagra and Alcohol
Taking Kamagra with alcohol may cause undesirable effects as both can cause lowering of blood pressure.
A starting dose of one 50mg Kamagra is taken orally with or without food, about an hour before sexual activity is recommended. If Kamagra is taken with food, its effect might take longer. Kamagra’s effect may be achieved within 30 minutes after taking the medication and may last about 4 hours provided there is sexual stimulation. Note that this medication will not work without any sexual stimulation.
The dose may be adjusted, either lowered to 25mg or increased to 100mg, depending on its efficacy. The maximum dose of Kamagra is 100mg per day. Talk to a healthcare provider to discuss dose adjustments.
Men with the following conditions must begin with a lower dose of Kamagra:
- Men older than 65
- Men with serious kidney or liver problems
- Men taking protease inhibitors
- Men with prostate problems
- Men with abnormal blood pressure
Kamagra is not an aphrodisiac and should not be taken by women and children. This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Kamagra may cause mild to moderate side effects which only last a few hours. The common side effects which occur in only 2% of individuals taking this medication are, but not limited to the following:
- Nasal congestion
- Flushing (redness, warmth)
- Urinary tract infection
- Respiratory tract infection
- Back pain or muscle pain
- Abnormal vision (blurred or change in color vision)
Taking of Kamagra must be stopped and medical help is urgently needed if the following are experienced:
- Sudden vision loss or decrease in vision
- Sudden hearing loss or ringing in the ears
- Painful and prolonged erection
- Heat attack symptoms (chest pain, nausea, sweating, pain spreading to jaw or shoulder)
- Irregular heartbeat
- Swelling in hands, feet and ankles
- Shortness of breath
Seek immediate medical help if an allergic reaction to Kamagra occurs characterized by difficulty in breathing, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat.
An immediate medical attention is also needed for men who have erection that lasts more than 4 hours. Permanent damage to the penis may occur if this side effect is ignored.
Side effects of this drug is not limited to the list above. Seek the advice of a healthcare provider for more information.
