Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use and store glucose. Therefore, glucose backs up in the bloodstream causing one’s blood glucose to rise higher than what the body needs. When this occurs, then one needs antidiabetic agents. These agents are aimed at relieving diabetic symptoms, such as thirst, frequent urination, polyuria, weight loss, and ketoacidosis. The long-term goals are to prevent the development of or slow the progression of long term complications of the disease. When you want to choose an antidiabetic agent one need to know the type of diabetes that they are suffering from. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 (insulin dependent) requires insulin to treat, is typically developed as a child or young adult. This disease destroys the pancreatic cell meaning no insulin production is possible. Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent) is considerably more common and typically affects people over the age of 45 who are unable to produce enough insulin and sugar build up in the bloodstream. These medicines, either makes the pancreas produce more insulin requirements by the liver. If normoglycemia is not achieved with oral medicine, then insulin can be added to the therapy.
