Product Information

Tenvir EM is a combination drug consisting of two active ingredients, 200mg of Emtricitabine and 300mg of Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate which are both antiviral drugs. This combination drug is prescribed to treat HIV infection and to prevent of getting HIV infection.

As treatment for HIV infection, this medication is used with other HIV medications to prevent the virus called HIV in spreading or multiplying in the body. This virus is popularly known to cause Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) damages the immune system by specifically attacking the immune cells CD4+, cells which helps fight infection. When these cells are damaged, it can lead to life-threatening infections. Too much damaged CD4+ cells can result to AIDS. As Tenvir EM prevents the multiplication and spread of HIV, it keeps the virus down to low levels to help increase CD4+ cells, help the body recover and reduce the progression of the disease.

As prevention of getting HIV infection, this medication is used with safe sex practices. It is used for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV. Those who are at high risk include male-female or male-male sex partners where one partner is HIV infected, and also where males or females have sex with IV drug users at risk of contracting HIV.

Tenvir EM, containing two antiretroviral drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is effective against HIV by inhibiting the enzymes needed by the virus to replicate. Retroviruses like HIV convert RNA to DNA which becomes integrated with the DNA of infected immune cells necessary for replication. The two active drugs block the enzyme needed for transcribing viral RNA to DNA, preventing the integration of the virus into the DNA of infected immune cells thus inhibiting the replication of HIV and reduces amount of virus.

Tenvir EM slows down HIV replication but does not kill the virus, nor cure HIV infection or AIDS. This medication does not prevent the transmission of infection to others.
