Product Information

Proscare contains 5mg of the active ingredient Finasteride, which is primarily used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. During clinical trials with Finasteride, hair growth was noted as its side effect which led to some companies developing Finasteride to treat male pattern baldness. It works by inhibiting the action of the enzyme called 5-alpha- reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which actually shrinks hair follicles, leading to hair loss. In order to increase hair regrowth and slow down hair loss, FInasteride inhibits the enzyme to reduce DHT levels. This medication does not affect hair growth in other parts of the body.

Dosage

A healthcare provider must be consulted before taking Proscare.

The usual adult dose of Finasteride for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia is 5mg once a day. As for androgenetic alopecia in men, 1mg once daily is the usual adult dose. The safety and efficacy of treating male pattern hair loss has been established in men aged 18 to 41 years with mild to moderate hair loss in the vertex and mid scalp area.

Proscare is available as a 5mg Finasteride medication. 1mg per day of Finasteride is already an effective treatment and the recommended dose for hair loss. Taking the whole 5mg per day won’t increase and speed up its efficacy. Therefore, this medication is best taken in 4 divided doses. Divide the tablet into 4 parts using a tablet cutter to get 1.25mg per piece. Take one 1.25mg piece orally, once a day, with or without food, and swallowed whole with a glassful of water. Each dose must be taken at the same time each day. The dose must not be doubled to compensate for a missed dose.

The effect of this medication may be seen in about 3 months of taking it.  Continuous and regular use is recommended to maintain the benefit from this drug. Stopping the use may lead to the reversal of its effects within 12 months.
