Product Information

Bimat eye drops contains 0.03%w/v Bimatoprost as its active ingredient. Bimatoprost is primarily used to treat patients with glaucoma by reducing the pressure inside the eyes or the intraocular pressure. The increase in pressure damages the optic nerve fibers leading the gradual loss of sight. Reducing this intraocular pressure reduces the risk of blindness associated with glaucoma. The pressure build-up is caused by a blockage in the drainage system called aqueous humour which is responsible for normal eye pressure. Bimatoprost works by increasing the flow of aqueous humour out of the eyes via spongy tissues called the trabecular network causing a balanced flow of liquid thus reducing eye pressure.

Aside from this, Bimat is also used for the treatment of eyelash hypotrichosis. Eyelash hypotrichosis is a condition where eyelash growth or amount of eyelashes is inadequate. Bimatoprost increases growth of eyelashes, and increases its length, thickness and darkness. This eyelash enhancement effect of Bimatoprost was once observed as a side effect, but is now a desirable effect. Medications such as Bimat are developed with eyelash hypotrichosis as an approved indication. Bimatoprost being a synthetic prostaglandin analog, works by acting on prostaglandin receptors in the hair follicles, stimulating resting follicles to go into their growing follicle phase.

Dosage

It is best to consult a doctor before using Bimat for glaucoma or eyelash hypotrichosis.

Bimatoprost for glaucoma:

Before using Bimatoprost, make sure to remove contact lenses and hands are clean. Instill one drop of Bimat to the affected eye, once a day. Hold the eye open, carefully squeeze a drop to the eye, and gently close and reopen eyes to help spread the medication. Continue use of this medication as prescribed by a physician.

Bimat for eyelash hypotrichosis:

Before using Bimat, make sure that the face is clean, hands are clean and contact lenses are removed. Using a sterile applicator, Bimat must be applied at night unless the physician advises otherwise.

Squeeze a drop of Bimat to the tip of the applicator and apply the medication directly at the base of the upper eyelashes, starting from the inner to the outer part of the lash line. Blot excess Bimat solution with a clean tissue or cloth. Eye must not be rinsed off the solution gets into the eye, for it will not cause damage. Note that this medication must not be applied on the lower eyelid to avoid the solution running to the cheeks and other skin areas as it may also cause hair growth to other skin areas.

One applicator must be used for one eyelid only and strictly for one-time use. Throw the applicator after use to avoid contamination. Contact lenses may be reinserted after 15 minutes of drug application.

Results may be visible within 8 to 10 weeks of using Bimat and with a maximum effect by 12 to 16 weeks. Note that there may be a difference in length, thickness, pigmentation, or direction of eyelash growth between the eyes. Eyelashes will return to its original state or appearance in a few weeks or months if the use of this medication is stopped.
