Product Information

Doxycycline hyclate is the active ingredient of Doxycept. It contains 100mg of the broad-spectum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline family. It is an effective treatment for a wide variety of bacterial infections caused gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria such as chlamydias, mycoplasmas, rickettsiae, staphylococci, bacteroides species, peptococcus species, propionibacterium species, even protozoan parasites and more.

This drug is used in treating infections of the respiratory and urinary tracts, in treating acne vulgaris and acne rosacea, pneumonia and many others. This drug may also be used in the treatment of malaria and prophylaxis for some types of malaria, anthrax and leptospirosis. It is the drug of choice in for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Doxycycline binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, preventing addition of amino acids to the growing peptide, thus leading to protein synthesis inhibition. By inhibiting protein synthesis, this slows bacterial growth thus allowing the body’s immune system to fight the bacterial infection.

Doxycept should only be used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It will not work in treating viral infections. Misuse of antibiotics can cause a decrease in effectiveness.

Dosage

Each patient’s dosage will vary, depending on one’s type of infection, age, other medical conditions, other drugs currently used and the response to treatment.

This drug is best taken on an empty stomach, about 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Tablet must be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. A constant blood level of drug must be maintained to get optimum antibacterial benefit.

The usual initial adult dose of doxycycline hyclate is 100mg every 12 hours followed by 100mg daily as the maintenance dose. For children weighing 45kg or less, the recommended initial dose is 4.4.mg per kg body weight, divided into two doses, followed by a maintenance dose of 2.2mg per kg body weight given as a single daily dose or divided into two doses. For severe infections, higher doses may be required.

Acne

  • An initial dose of 100mg twice daily for 3 to 6 weeks or until acne improves
  • Maintenance dose is 50 to 150mg once daily

Acne Rosacea

  • Experts recommend 100mg twice daily

  • Experts recommend 100mg every 12 hours for 7 to 10 days

Chlamydia infection

  • 100mg twice a day for 7 days is the recommended dose

Malaria

  • The recommended dose is 100mg twice daily for 7 days
  • For malaria prophylaxis, 100mg once daily for the duration of stay in the area prone to malaria. First dose is taken 1 to 2 days before travel or as directed. The drug must be continued for 4 more weeks after returning home from travel.
